Mammals of the Brussels Region: Summary of Status and Distribution.

The overall present-day status of the species is indicated in the second column by a letter: X: verified present-day or recent occurrence; P: highly probable present-day or recent occurrence (sight records of difficult-to-identify species, ultrasound records of bats); ?: Possible occurrence, unverified; E: extinct or very probably extinct (the date is the known or approximate date of the last record, placed in the geographical context in which the last record was made).

The distribution is summarised by a two-tier division of the landscapes of the region. The first level of division distinguishes between three major types of land use, "Forest", a semi-natural zone that includes only the Forêt de Soignes, "Green spaces" a collection of unbuilt areas, including parks and rural areas, "Urban", the rest of the urban fabric, comprising densely built-up areas as well as more open residential zones. At the second level of division, the latter two types of land use are distributed between the concentric belts of increasing urban density that are developed from the outer periphery to the centre, as follows: Urban: P: green periphery with tree-rich neighbourhoods; M: middle belt of densely-built neighbourhoods with green interiors of blocks; C: central core, inside the pentagon. Green spaces: P: parks and rural zones of the green periphery; M: public parks of the middle belt; C: parks of the central core.
