Introductory note

This list has been updated in November 1998.

The sequence, systematics and scientific nomenclature follow Voous (1973, 1977) with a few modifications introduced during a meeting of experts held on March 24, 1988. Some well differenciated forms, often considered species, are indicated here. Without taking any position regarding their taxonomic status, they are mentioned after the species to which they are usually associated and preceded by the sign #. The english names follow The Birds of the Western Palaearctic by Snow and Perrins, published in 1998.

For a species to be included in the list of the European Union it must have been observed in the wild in at least one Member State, accepted by the National Birds Committees and published in their annual reports. Species whose origin is considered to be doubtful by these Committees are excluded from the list.
